Respecting Chronic Pain

Chronic pain deserves respect from all who are involved: the person with pain, their families and healthcare professionals. Chronic pain is not easy to solve and it is never caused by just one factor. Thus, chronic pain can be very formidable and should be taken seriously.

Sometimes people in chronic pain feel that their doctors may not believe them, making them feel like it’s all in their head. Or, although meaning well, family members show through words and actions that they really don’t know what it’s like to live with constant pain. These factors can exhaust those in chronic pain and add to the frustration.

At SPARC we understand what the life of someone in chronic pain is like. We also understand that everyone is unique and their pain is affected by many different variables. Your pain deserves respect. You, as a person, deserve respect. We aim to treat, not just a structural problem in the body, but all of the physiological, cognitive and emotional factors that come with it. To be truly successful, all systems of the body must be examined. Anything less would be a lack of respect.

If you are in chronic pain how can you show your pain the respect it deserves? Even though chronic pain can be extremely frustrating, you cannot allow anger or desperation to determine the lifestyle you choose for yourself. Resolving chronic pain or restoring function is not based around one type of treatment but a complete way of living.

Respecting chronic pain means we recognize how complex chronic pain is and that the road to feeling better involves changing our habits, nutrition, the way we think, the way we move and the way we talk about pain. This path is what we specialize in at SPARC and we would love to help you begin your journey to taking back your life.
